Why HBCU and NYCPS?

HBCUs are celebrated for their belief that everyone deserves access to higher education, founded to provide that opportunity for the African American community in a post-Civil War nation. Nearly 200 years later, with over 100 Universities across the country, the impact of HBCUs is clear and their reach is expansive, serving a diverse community of students and offering a wide range of programs, including the majority of Black judges, lawyers, pilots, and public school teachers. One such HBCU Early College Prep High School, a New York City Public School, exemplifies this commitment to providing educational opportunities for all.

More than anything, HBCUs understand the importance of community, and individual stories – wrapping their arms around Black and Brown youth, inviting students into a journey through young adulthood. This holistic approach, daring students to dream big and supporting them along the way – is the essence of what it means to be a part of the HBCU family, one that stays for life. However, there are no HBCUs in New York, and NYCPS serves 65% Black and Hispanic students, with Southeast Queens serving an even greater proportion – all at a time post-pandemic when we’re striving to realize innovative educational experiences through accelerated models. Here are the DSU services that will bring it to life.
